Geodetic Surveys

The Geodetic Surveys division provides geodetic information (truth data) and analysis to DoD, Federal Agencies, IC and Contractors that support weapons, navigation, and collection systems. Provide information (truth data) used to maintain and calibrate systems. Support US national security and intelligence objectives through Geophysical, Geodetic & Hand Held GEOINT (HHG) data collection and dissemination.

If you are interested in NGA Office of Geomatics survey assistance please email us using the contact info at the bottom of the page.

Geodetic Positioning Surveys

Geodetic Surveying determines precise point positions on the surface of the earth. Surveys are done on a worldwide scale where the curvature of the earth needs to be accounted for. NGA uses appropriate collection and analytical techniques (e.g., Geodetic Positioning, Geodetic Azimuths, Terrestrial LiDAR and Precise Leveling) to determine three dimensional positions relative to WGS 84 reference frame.

Geophysical Surveys

Geophysical Surveying involves measuring the geophysical properties of the earth's surface. NGA collects, processes and analyzes gravity (absolute & relative), magnetic and gradiometric data in support of Defense Department navigational systems.

Astronomic Surveys

Astronomic Surveying is the determination of latitude and longitude referenced to the celestial sphere. NGA collects, processes and analyzes astronomic positional and azimuthal information in support of Defense Department alignment and navigational systems.

Geotagged Stills

NGA collects and processes GEOINT data utilizing immersive 360 degree digital video and digital still photography. All information is geo-referenced using GPS and is displayed in a web browser allowing for full immersive viewing of collected information.

California

California provides precise geodetic surveying support and technical advice in geodesy to the Air Force Test Center (AFTC), Edwards AFB, CA; the 30th Space Wing and Western Range, Vandenberg AFB, CA; other DOD agencies, ranges, and contractors within the assigned area of responsibility. They also perform other geodetic surveying projects in the western United States to include China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center, Fort Irwin National Training Center, 29 Palms Marine Corp Air Ground Combat Center, the Sea Range at Point Mugu, Nevada Test and Training Range, and Utah Test and Training Range.

California has two Range Support Teams, one at Edwards AFB, CA and one at Vandenberg AFB, CA. Their presence on these ranges providing geodetic support has been continuous for over 50 years. For more information, please email us using the contact info at the bottom of the page.

Florida

Florida (Eastern Range) provides precise geodetic surveys and staff support to include recommending geodetic policy, reviewing plans and requirements, assisting offices in requesting geodetic support, and assigning priorities to geodetic surveys for the 45th Space Wing, Patrick AFB, FL. They also provide geodetic surveying support and technical advice in geodesy to: 46th Test Wing, Eglin AFB, FL; Atlantic Test Range (ATR), Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, MD; Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC), Andros, Bahamas; and other DOD agencies, ranges, and contractors within the southeastern United States and down-range islands. For more information, please email us using the contact info at the bottom of the page.

New Mexico

New Mexico provides accurate and timely geodetic and geophysical (G&G) survey support and related technical assistance in support of the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), Holloman AFB's 704th Test Group and other DOD agencies, ranges, and contractors within the assigned area of responsibility (AOR). Locations inside their AOR include Ft. Huachuca Electronic Test Range (ETR) and Yuma Proving Grounds (YPG) in Arizona. New Mexico has two Range Support Teams, one at White Sands Missile Range and one at Holloman AFB. Their presence on these ranges providing G&G support has been continuous for over 40 years. For more information, please email us using the contact info at the bottom of the page.

Missouri

St. Louis performs worldwide geodetic, geophysical, and handheld GEOINT surveys in support of DOD/IC national security interests and objectives; to provide ground truth, airfield surveys, and a wide variety of geodetic/geophysical data collection and analysis to support DOD flight safety, inertial navigation systems, and weapon system testing and evaluation.

FILE/LINK DESCRIPTION
Geodetic Survey Database (GSD)
Visualize control point data and download survey publications.
Geodetic Survey App (GeoSAPP)
Provides capability to access and extract Geodetic Survey data into customer specified format. It is designed to efficiently increase the calculations and procedures involved with processing runway profile data for airfield surveys. There are several other functions this program performs such as calculating the horizontal and vertical position of abeam points on airfield runways, determining the position of the touchdown zone on a surveyed runway, providing various other survey computation tools and providing a metadata builder for terrestrial lidar collections.
