Vector Map (VMap) Level 0 is an updated and improved version of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) Digital Chart of the World (DCW®). The VMap Level 0 database provides worldwide coverage of vector-based geospatial data which can be viewed at 1:1,000,000 scale. It consists of geographic, attribute, and textual data stored on compact disc read-only memory (CD-ROM). The primary source for the database is the 1:1,000,000 scale Operational Navigation Chart (ONC) series co-produced by the military mapping authorities of Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, and the United States. The complete database is available on a set of four CD-ROM's and contains more than 1,800 megabytes of vector data organized into 10 thematic layers. VMap Level 0 includes major road and rail networks, hydrologic drainage systems, utility networks (cross-country pipelines and communication lines), major airports, elevation contours, coastlines, international boundaries and populated places. VMap Level 0 includes an index of geographic names to aid in locating areas of interest. VMap Level 0 is accessible directly from the CD-ROM or can be transferred to a hard drive and used in many geographic information system (GIS) applications.
VMap Level 0's world coverage is divided into four libraries based on
geographic areas. The geographic areas and library names, by disc, are:
Disc 1 - North America (NOAMER),
Disc 2 - Europe and North Asia (EURNASIA),
Disc 3 - South America, Africa, and Antarctica (SOAMAFR), and
Disc 4 - South Asia and Australia (SASAUS).
The data structure is Vector Product Format (VPF) to US Military Standard
(MIL-STD-2407) which is compliant with the international standard, Digital
Geographic Information Exchange Standard (DIGEST) Annex C. The VMap Level
0 feature and attribute content is defined in the US Military Specification
for VMap Level 0(MIL-V-89039).
Application software, called VPFVIEW V2.1, has been developed by NIMA
and allows users the ability to access and view VMap Level 0 data. The
software, available separately from NIMA or USGS within the DMAMUSE software
package, has been developed to operate on an IBM PC, or compatible microcomputer,
as well as SUN UNIX, Silicon Graphics, Hewlett-Packard, and MacIntosh.
VPFVIEW V2.1 is automatically installed if the program DMAMUSE V 2.0 is
downloaded directly from the NIMA homepage. VPFVIEW V2.1 software allows
users to create "map-like" views of the digital data on a computer
screen. Special "map-like" views will be distributed with the
VMap Level 0 product to be used in conjunction with the VPFVIEW V2.1 application
to facilitate usage. By using VPFVIEW V2.1, the effective scale can be
changed by zooming in or out. VPFVIEW V2.1 can also access portions of
the VPF database which have been copied from the CD-ROM and saved on the
computer's hard disk. Simple plots can be generated in postscript format.
A VPFVIEW V2.1 user's manual, and installation instructions, are also available.
The manual is in MS Word, Rich Text Format (RTF), and ASCII (TXT) formats.
