GEOnet Names Server (GNS)

US BGN Advisory Committee on Undersea Features (ACUF)

ACUF was established to recommend standardization policy for names of undersea features and to recommend official standard names based on proposals submitted by authorities in the field or usage on hydrographic and bathymetric charts.

 Membership

The members come from various federal agencies and are experts in the fields of bathymetry and/or geomorphology. The members are nominated by US BGN to the Secretary of the Interior. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) provides the secretariat for the committee.

Undersea Feature Names Database

The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) promulgates the undersea features names approved by the US BGN. 

Tips for use of the GNS for undersea feature names

• Access the GEOnet Names Server (GNS) web site
• Select Access GNS at top of page
• Select GNS Search located at the top of the light blue-shaded column on the left
• In the Country Code scroll-down window select UNDERSEA FEATURES (UF)
• Enter all other relevant search parameters

Information for submitting name proposals

An Excel worksheet or .PDF image version of the proposal form may be found here [PROPOSAL.xls] [ACUF_PROPOSAL.pdf]. Please consult the ACUF standardization guidelines [GUIDELINES05.pdf or GUIDELINES05.doc] and the list of approved feature designations and their definitions. Please send all completed proposals to the address on the proposal form.
