Abstract: "This technical report presents an update to the Department of Defense (DoD) World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS 84). The update of WGS 84 was initiated for the purpose of providing more accurate geodetic and gravitational data required by DoD navigation and weapon systems, particularly through the development of a more accurate reference frame, Earth Gravitational Model (EGM) and corresponding geoid. This update represents the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's modeling of the Earth from a geometric, geodetic, and gravitational standpoint using data, techniques, and technology available through 1996. Additional GPS survey information has since been used to update the datum transformation tables."

TM8358.1: Defense Mapping Agency Technical Manual 8358.1 Datums, Ellipsoids, Grids and Grid Reference Systems.

Abstract: "This manual describes the basic principles of the Military Grid Reference System and the non-standard reference systems. It describes the method for determining references on maps and charts at scales of 1:1,000,000 and larger. It contains identifications for the grid zone designations and for the 100,000 meter squares of the Universal Transverse Mercator Grid and the Universal Polar Stereographic Grid. It also contains the specifications and grid identifications for the various non-standard grids. It provides diagrams and textual information for delineating geodetic datums and ellipsoids."

TM8358.2: Defense Mapping Agency Technical Manual 8358.2 The Universal Grids: Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) and Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS)

Abstract: "This manual describes geographic to grid and grid to geographic conversions from the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) and the Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS) grids. It also discusses computations for convergence from geographic positions and from grid coordinates for the UTM grid, and the convergence in the Polar Stereographic projection. Both mathematical and tabular methods are illustrated for the above items. A discussion of scale corrections is included. Transformations between the two grids, the Military Grid Reference System and the World Geographic Reference System are discussed. Finally, datum transformation methods, formulas and definitions are illustrated. Diagrams, textual information and software are provided."

The National Technical Information Service (NTIS) provides its customers with a large number of options as to how they order (800 number, web page form, FAX, e-mail, etc.), and they provide information about foreign cooperating offices that can also provide the documents. The NTIS is never out of stock. Should a document be out of print, they will print one to satisfy a request provided the document has not been superseded. Note, however, that NTIS's order numbers are different from NGA's order numbers. Order numbers can be found by a search on keywords in the titles of the publications of interest.
